20 Girl Empowerment Songs

I’ve always had a deep connection with music. I have playlist saved for every possible occasion. I listen from pop, to hip-hop, to country, to classic music and even mariachi. So today, I decided to share part of my Girl Empowerment playlist, that I listen to whenever I need inspiration to keep going. Some of the songs on this list are not necessary for girls only, but they deserved to be on the list anyways.

01. Breakaway- Kelly Clarkson

Growing up in a small town, always dreaming about moving somewhere else and doing big things; I’ve related to this song my entire life. Everytime I listen to it, it reminds me of the goals I have in life and that sacrifices are necessary, even if it means packing up my entire life in a suitcase and leaving my hometown.

Favorite lyrics:

Wanted to belong here

But something felt so wrong here

So I pray

I could breakaway

I’ll spread my wings and learn how to fly

I’ll do what it takes ‘till I touch the sky

And I’ll make a wish

Take a chance

Make a change

And breakaway

02. Doubt- Mary J. Blige

I must admit, the first time I listened to this song it made me cry. It’s the perfect song to listen to when you’re feeling like giving up; when you feel like you’ll never get to where you want to be. And of course, Mary J. Blige takes it to another level with her flawless voice.

Favorite lyrics:

You said I’d never be a leader

You said I’d never wear a crown

If I wanted to be someone

I should learn to settle down

I made it to the end

I nearly paid the cost

I lost a lot of friends

I sacrificed a lot

I’d do it all again

‘Cause I made it to the top

But I can’t keep doubting myself anymore

03. On my own- Miley Cyrus

In this song Miley tells us that it’s ok to feel like we have nobody. That even when no one believes in us, even when it might feel like no one loves us, we can still count on ourselves.

Favorite lyrics:

Can’t you get it done with the help of no one

I came to this world by myself

So I don’t need nobody else!

We have just begun

So much to do, so young

Don’t be afraid of alone

You’ll get it done on your own!

04. Woman like me- Little Mix (ft. Nicki Minaj)

We all have flaws. And long gone are the times when women had to pretend they had it all under control, like they were perfect. And this song is here to remind us of that.

Favorite lyrics:

I always say what I’m feeling

I was born without a zip on my mouth

Sometimes I don’t even mean it

It takes a little while to figure me out

I made a few mistakes, I regret it nightly

I broke a couple hearts that I wear on my sleeve

My momma always said, “girl you’re trouble” and

And now I wonder, could you fall for a woman like me

05. Fight song- Rachel Platten

The first time I listened to this song I was living in the States, feeling like everything was falling apart, and like everything I had done had been for nothing. But with her lyrics, Rachel Platten reminded me that there’s always hope, and that we have to keep fighting for the things we want.

Favorite lyrics:

This is my fight song

Take back my life song

Prove I’m alright song

My power’s turned on

Starting right now I’ll be strong

I’ll play my fight song

And I don’t really care if nobody else believes

‘Cause I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me

05. Can’t be tamed- Miley Cyrus

Even though when this song came out I was too young to understand what it was about, as I grew up I realized it was about freedom. It’s about women being free and how we don’t need anyone’s approval to be ourselves.

Favorite lyrics:

They try to change me

But they realize they can’t

And every tomorrow is a day I never plan

If you’re gonna be my man understand

I can’t be tamed

I can’t be tamed

I can’t be blamed

I can’t, I can’t

I can’t be tamed

I can’t be changed

I can’t be tamed

I can’t, I can’t be tamed

06. Woman- Kesha

I like this song, not only because Kesha sounds like a total badass, but because when I listen to it I remember how much I want to be an independent woman. Be able to support myself, get the things I want, all on my own.

Favorite lyrics:

Don’t buy me a drink, I make my money

Don’t touch my weave, don’t call me “honey”

‘Cause I run my shit baby, I run my shit.

I’m a motherfucking woman, baby, alright

I don’t need a man to be holding me too tight

I’m a motherfucking woman, that’s right

I’m just having fun with my ladies here tonight

07. I did something bad- Taylor Swift

What I love about Taylor’s songs is that, even though they always come from very experiences she’s had, you can almost always relate to them. This song for example, talks about how it’s ok for a guy to play with a girl’s feelings, but when is the other way around, we are the bad ones. We are the witches.

Favorite lyrics

I never trust a narcissist

But they love me

So I play them like a violin

And I make it look oh so easy

‘Cause for every lie I tell them

They tell me three

This is how the world works

Now all he thinks about is me

I can feel the flames on my skin

Crimson red paint on my lips

If a man talks shit, then I owe him nothing

I don’t regret it one bit, ‘cause he had it coming

08. Run the world (girls)- Beyonce

I think it was obvious that this song would be on this list. No one screams “girl power” louder than Beyonce.

Favorite lyrics:

My persuasion can build a nation

Endless power

Our love we can devour

You’ll do anything for me

Who run the world? Girls.

09. Miss me more- Kelsea Ballerini

Most of us know what it feels like to give up who you are for someone else. You change the way you dress, the way you speak; you even change your plans and dreams. Well, this song is about taking your power and your independence back.

Favorite lyrics:

I found my independence

Can’t believe I ever lost it

What you wanted, ain’t it?

It’s what you wanted

I thought I’d miss you (when it ended)

I thought it hurt me (but it didn’t)

I thought I’d miss you.

Yeah, I thought I’d miss you

But I miss me more.

10. F**kin’ perfect- P!nk

P!nk wrote this song for her daughter; she doesn’t want her to go through the same insecurities she had to deal with. For me, this song is like a letter I would write to my young-self. We all have flaws, and that’s ok. That’s what makes us all perfect in our own, particular way.

Favorite lyrics:

Mistreated, misplaced, misunderstood

Miss “no way, it’s all good”, it didn’t slow me down

Mistaken, always second guessing, underestimated

Look, I’m still around

Pretty, pretty please, don’t you ever, ever feel

Like you’re less than f**kin’ perfect

11. Do What U Want- Lady Gaga (ft. Christina Aguilera)

This songs reminds us that people are going to talk. Whether you’re a celebrity like Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera, or you’re a normal 20 year-old girl living in a small town, you know the feeling. When people say hurtful things about you, or when they start a rumor about something personal. Just remember, they don’t own you.

Favorite lyrics:

You can’t have my heart and

You won’t use my mind but

Do what you want with my body

Do what you want with my body

You can’t stop my voice ‘cause

You don’t own my life but

Do what you want with my body

Do what you want with my body

12. Confident- Demi Lovato

Demi has always been very open about her battle with addictions, eating disorders, depresion and her mental illness. This is I find her and her music inspiring. She has no filters, and that reminds us that we are only human. But we also have to know our strengths and never be afraid to use them.

Favorite lyrics:

It’s time for me to take it

I’m the boss right now

Not gonna fake it

Not when you go down

‘Cause this is my game

And you better come to play

What’s wrong with being, what’s wrong with being

What’s wrong with being confident?

What’s wrong with being, what’s wrong with being

What’s wrong with being confident?

13. Rise- Katy Perry

Anyone with big dreams and goals can relate to this song. But the fact that it was written for the Olympics and ended up being Hillary Clinton’s anthem for her campaign is more than enough of a reason to put it on this list.

Favorite lyrics:

Victory is in my veins

I know it, I know it

And I will not negotiate

I’ll fight it, I’ll fight it

I will transform

When, when the fire’s at my feet again

And the vultures all start circling

They’re whispering,

you’re out of time

But still, I rise

This is no mistake, no accident

When you think the final nail is in, think again

Don’t be surprised, I will still rise

14. The Champion- Carrie Underwood ft. Ludacris

This is another song that can be relatable to anyone, no matter their gender. But I decided to include it on the list because of the feeling it gives me. It’s one of those songs that I listen to when I feel like giving up; when I feel like I will never get to where I want to be.

Favorite lyrics:

I’ve been waiting my whole life

To see my name in lights

I am invincible, unbreakable

Unstoppable, unshakeable

They knock me down, I get up again

I am the champion

You’re gonna know my name

You can’t hurt me now

I can’t feel the pain

I was made for this, yeah, I was born to win

I am the champion, oh

15. Devil in me- Halsey

This song reminds us that we all have a power inside us that sometimes society forces us to turn off. Because we’re not supposed to be strong, because we’re not supposed to have careers; we’re not supposed to make others feel threatened by our skills and abilities.

Favorite lyrics:

You said I would’ve hit the ceiling

You said I

You said I should eat my feelings

Head held high

I won’t take anyone down if I crawl tonight

But I still let everyone down when I change in size

And I went tumbling down tryna reach your high

But I scream too loud if I speak my mind

16. Alive- Sia

This song, again, can be about anyone, and that’s what I love the most about it. It describes a child that had “nothing” but wanted everything. Dreamed about getting out of her situation and becoming someone. And it also talks about mental illness, like depression and anxiety. And after all that, she still sings “I’m alive”.

Favorite lyrics:

I had a one-way ticket to a place where all the demons go

Where the wind don’t change

And nothing in the ground can ever grow

No hope, just lies

And you’re taught to cry into your pillow

But I survived

I’m still breathing, I’m still breathing

I’m still breathing, I’m still breathing

I’m alive

17. GIRL- Maren Morris

We live our lives comparing ourselves to others. Who’s skinnier than us, who’s prettier, who has nicer things, a nicer house, a better job. It is such an exhausting game, that it really has to stop. It was actually the first thing I wrote for my “23 things I’ve learned in life” post: Stop comparing yourself to others. We’re all in our own, individual journey and that’s okay.

Favorite lyrics:

Draw your comparisons, trying to find who’s lesser than

I don’t wanna wear your crown, there’s enough to go around

What you feel is natural

You don’t gotta put up with this anymore

Pick yourself up from the kitchen floor

Tell me what you waiting for?

18. Broken Glass- Rachel Platten

Rachel Platten’s story is so inspiring. She never gave up, even when people made her doubt herself very often. Remember is all about persistence.

Favorite lyrics:

I’m gonna dance on broken glass

Ey, on broken glass

And I’m gonna make that ceiling crash (uh)

That ceiling crash

So what? Still got knives in my back
So what? So I’m tied to the tracks
I’m gonna dance on broken glass
And here I go, here I go

19. Who you are- Jessie J

This song came to my life when I was at my darkest moment. When I felt worthless and like I didn’t have a future. I didn’t even know who I was anymore. Even to this day, this song makes me feel better everytime I’m feeling down.

Favorite lyrics:

I stare at my reflection in the mirror

Why am I doing this to myself?

Losing my mind on a tiny error,

I nearly left the real me on the shelf

No, no, no, no

Don’t lose who you are, in the blur of the stars

Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,

It’s okay not to be okay

Sometimes it’s hard, to follow your heart

Tears don’t mean you’re losing, everybody’s bruising,

Just be true to who you are

20. BO$$- Fifth Harmony

I have to admit I was never really a big fan of Fifth Harmony, but I always loved this song. It is really empowering and inspiring.

Favorite lyrics:

Boss Michelle Obama

Purse so heavy gettin’ Oprah dollas

That’s me, I’m confident

Don’t want yo compliments

Use common sense

I’m on my Michelle Obama

Shhhh Shut your mouth
